*Wilhelm was a royal regent at this point because his brother, Friedrich-Wilhelm IV, had suffered a stroke in 1857 that left him mentally incapacitated (a condition some thought he had displayed well before his stroke). Wilhelm became Prussian king on his brother’s death in 1861.
†The town is still striving to capitalize on this historic meeting. In May 2014, civic leaders unveiled a life-sized bronze sculpture of the two potentates standing together in a central square.
